The Truth about the music biz

The Truth about the music biz

After more than four decades in the music business, I’ve learned that this life is about a whole lot more than playing songs on a stage.

I’ve been fortunate to work in many corners of the industry—live performance, live sound, session work, singing, songwriting, publishing, royalties, sync licensing, audio engineering, record production, film scoring, artist endorsements, and serving as a hired gun for major artists.

Along the way, I’ve learned that talent matters, but character matters more. Being dependable, respectful, considerate, and kind will take you farther than most people realize. Those qualities often determine how long you can weather the storms that come with this business.

The truth is, nobody really understands this life until they’ve lived it full-time without a safety net. When your next paycheck depends on your ability to create, perform, produce, and deliver, you learn pretty quickly what you’re made of. There are no guarantees, no time clock to punch—just faith, hard work, and the determination to keep moving forward.

I’ve had my share of successes and failures, victories and setbacks. I’m still learning every day. But if there’s one thing I know for certain, it’s that perseverance, humility, and a strong work ethic still matter.

This business has been a tough teacher, but it’s given me a lifetime of stories, friendships, lessons, and experiences that I wouldn’t trade for anything.

And while I don’t wear a hat very often, I sure would tip one to my beautiful wife, Rashelle. She’s a tiny stick of dynamite with a heart bigger than life itself. Through uncertainty, hardship, and challenges that would shake the strongest dreamers, she’s stood by my side with unwavering strength and grace.

Right behind her are my children, my mom and dad, my brother and sister-in-law, and a handful of trusted lifelong friends. Their love, encouragement, and belief in me have carried me through more than they’ll ever know. That’s the kind of wealth you can’t measure and can’t put a price on.

I’m grateful for every mile of this journey—and for every person who helped me travel it.
